FAQ

Is RedCritter FREE?

Yes, RedCritter is totally free for all users, including developers. We also offer paid business versions for cloud (software as a service) and behind-the-firewall (host your own) enterprise solutions. These solutions offer your company's IT department the ability to manage your users, Apps and permissions as well as create private Apps available only to your company.

What skills do I need to develop RedCritter Apps?

RedCritter Apps are created using Microsoft Silverlight 3 or later with either C# or VB.Net. If you can build a Silverlight app you should be able to create RedCritter Apps with a minimal learning curve. See our Developers area for learning materials and Visual Studio Templates to get you started.

Do I need my own server to host my RedCritter App?

No, RedCritter is a cloud-based service. We provide the all the tools to upload, host and manage your RedCritter App.

How are RedCritter Apps different from standard Silverlight Apps?

RedCritter Apps built on Silverlight but RedCritter also gives you high level APIs that make creating, testing and deploying interactive Outlook-aware Apps extremely simple.

What types of Apps can I build for RedCritter?

Your imagination is the limit. We suggest creating Apps that deliver useful information at-a-glance with minimal user input. RedCritter Apps can integrate News, sports, blogs and even social media. Optionally, your App can even respond to Outlook events.

What type of integration with Outlook can I build into my App?

The RedCritter Outlook Interface lets you hook into Outlook and received events when a user selects an email, contact or appointment. You can also search the user's contacts by email address. For example your App could detect an email sender's email address and retrieve additional useful information about them from Web based APIs when the email is selected.

Can RedCritter Apps integrate with other APIs or Web Services on my own server?

Sure, RedCritter Apps have full Silverlight capabilities for calling Web Services and REST-based APIs. Your RedCritter App will run on the RedCritter domain so Silverlight Cross Domain policies apply as usual. If you are creating your own server-side interfaces and are using RedCritter Cloud, SMB or Enterprise versions, our Server Side API will help you with security and authentication.

Can I restrict which users have access to my App?

Apps created with free RedCritter accounts are available to everyone in the public App Gallery. If you would like to create private Apps you should sign up for RedCritter Cloud, SMB or Enterprise versions.

What information about the user am I allowed to store?

RedCritter has a built in API for storing user settings for your App. You may use this API to store any information or user preferences. You may only store the users numeric id on non-RedCritter servers. Storing additional user information is a violation of our Terms of Service and will result in the banning of your App. The only exception is if users explicity, manually opt to enter and share more information with your App. Information of this type must be clearly indicated in your user interface. If you are developing a private App for your company on RedCritter Cloud, SMB or Enterprise editions the only restrictions are those enforced by your own company.

Use of any user's personal information in unauthorized ways is a violation of the RedCritter Terms of Service.

Who owns the rights to the Apps that I create for RedCritter.com?

You own all rights to Apps you create and upload to redcritter.com. You do, however, by uploading your App agree that RedCritter may freely distribute your public Apps on the RedCritter platform as well as produce marketing materials featuring your App without restriction.
